Competition for a permanent exhibition in the historical Hotel Silber in Stuttgart (Germany).

Hotel Silber is of fundamental importance in order to understand the history of the state of Baden-Württemberg located in the southwest of Germany. This building opened as a luxurious hotel at the beginning of the 20th century. However it ended up being the Police Headquarters during the Weimer Republic, and became the Gestapo Headquarters. Contrary what we might expect, its turbulent story didn't finish at the end of the Second World War, but rather, the building continued until 1984 functioning as a Police Station.

The conceptual proposal and design of a permanent exhibition in Hotel Silber consists of the organisation and overlap between various narrative layers. On the one hand, there are the so called "windows to the past", where the past of the building is shown through the physical traces which can be found in the architecture. In this case, sound installations are used to convey the history and somehow make the building "talk". On the other hand, the groundfloor contains a chronological exhibition about the history of the building itself. The whole exhibit will be gradually discover by the visitor as he goes along the corridor.

The first floor hosts the most extensive part of the exhibition, where history is shown through the crossing over of the lives of some significant people from the past. The atmosphere of confrontation is represented by the chromatic division of the space (black/white), along with some scenographic resources, help us to explain the story behind every victim and his/her persecutor. Just at the precise moment their lives crossed.
